2018 Triennial Election Ballot

Important Election Information:

• YOU MUST HAVE A PAID ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP WITH ARS. Corporate, Complimentary, District, Libraries, Youth, E-members and Trial members cannot vote. Societies are allowed one vote.

• YOU MUST HAVE A WORKING EMAIL ADDRESS on file with ARS as stated in the Jan/Feb and Mar/Apr magazines to be eligible to vote. Associate members must also have a working email address to be eligible to vote. This can be a friend’s email address.

• ALL BALLOTS ARE NOW ELECTRONIC. Ballots will not be mailed. All ballot materials will be dispensed electronically via secure website (a third party election company-Intelliscan, Inc.) CHECK YOUR EMAIL (JUNK & SPAM FOLDERS).

• VOTING BEGINS at 9:00 a.m. Central on June 1, 2018 and ends at 12 noon Central on July 27, 2018.

• YOU WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL FROM INTELLISCAN, INC. with a personalized link to vote.

At the onset of the election, lntelliscan will send personalized emails to ARS members with functioning email addresses. The message will list instructions for voting online, along with a personalized embedded hyperlink that will take members directly to their ballot. Each voter must sign in to the voting page separately and use their own embedded hyperlink. (Members, Associates & Societies will receive their own separate emails).

The ARS election site will be designed so that members will click on the personalized embedded link from one of the email distributions and automatically access their personalized ballot.

The online ballot will include the slates that the members are eligible to vote on. The voter will be able to click on a candidate’s name to view his or her biography.

After casting votes, members will be taken to the voter review page and will then have the choice to “submit” their votes as shown or go back and change selections. This process will continue as many times as necessary until members click the “submit” button. After clicking “submit”, members will be sent to a page thanking them for voting and will include a link to the ARS site.

• ONCE A BALLOT has been submitted, the system will not allow the ballot to be accessed again. ONLY ONE VOTE PER MEMBER!

• YOU WILL RECEIVE TWO REMINDER EMAILS from Intelliscan, Inc. about voting, if you have not voted.

During the fielding period, Intelliscan will send two reminder messages to all ARS members with functioning email addresses who have not yet voted.

• ELECTRONIC BALLOT RESULTS are only seen by our election service provider Intelliscan, Inc. Their computer generates a report and the final results are presented to the ARS Tally Committee and others authorized by the ARS Board of Directors at the close of the election on July 27, 2018.

• Deadline for receipt of all online ballots by Intelliscan, Inc. is Noon [Central Daylight Savings Time], Friday, July 27, 2018.

Article XVI, Section 4 of the ARS Bylaws states:

“Section 4 - Except as otherwise set forth in these bylaws, any nominee running unopposed will be considered duly elected, and no vote will be taken. The Nominating Committee, however, should attempt to secure sufficient nominees to provide competitive elections.”

VICE PRESIDENT CANDIDATE RESUMES

Diane Sommers

Diane is a procurement manager for a global manufacturing company and resides in southeastern Wisconsin. She has been a member of the American Rose Society for 34 years and a member of her local rose society for more than 35 years. Diane has served as the North Central District Director from 2007 to 2012 and is currently serving as the ARS Region 5 Director. She is a member of the ARS Executive Committee, a position she has held for six of her nine years on the ARS Board. Diane was Treasurer of the ARS from 2010 - 2012 and has chaired the ARS Finance Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee and the Membership Committee. She has also served on the ARS Convention Planning Committee and has been a trustee for the ARS Maintenance Endowment Trust and the American Rose Society Endowment Trust. At the local level, Diane has served as President of the Waukesha and Milwaukee Rose Societies, Treasurer, Vice President responsible for meeting programs, Ways and Means Chair, Publicity Chair and Chair of four Local Rose Society Rose Shows and two North Central District Conventions. Diane has chaired and taught at numerous Horticulture Judging Schools and Consulting Rosarian Schools. She is a Master Consulting Rosarian, a Horticulture Judge and an Arrangement Judge. In 2010, Diane served as Chair of the ARS Mini National Conference in Milwaukee, WI. She is a frequent speaker in her community and at local rose society and district events. Diane has been recognized for her years of service and rose expertise with the ARS Silver Medal and two ARS Bronze Medals. She has also received the North Central District Outstanding Consulting Rosarian and Outstanding Judge Awards. Diane identifies her special qualifications for the office of vice president as her passion for roses, her experience growing and showing roses, her experience leading at every level of our organization, her thorough knowledge of ARS operations, her creative and collaborative style, and her ability to get the job done.

Christopher R VanCleave

​A 25 year banking veteran, Chris leads teams to achieve operational excellence at one of the nation’s top financial institutions. During his tenure, his prudent financial management skills, experience in process innovation and knack for building strong teams has produced millions in savings. As an appointed leader of a municipal Beautification Board in Helena, Alabama, Chris and his team work closely with the City Council, Mayor and city employees on a broad spectrum of issues related to

raising the standard of living in this municipality. A member of the American Rose Society for eight years Chris has served on the national level as a member of the Marketing and Membership Committee where on his own initiative resurrected the defunct Fragrant Rose newsletter and has served as its editor since. This valuable marketing tool is now reaching thousands every month many of whom are converting to full paid membership. Since 2015 Chris serves as the Membership Chairman for the Deep South District and also served as 2017 Chairman of the district’s mid-winter meeting. A member of the Birmingham Rose Society since 2007, he served two consecutive terms as President from 2011-2013. In 2012 and 2013 he served as Chairman of the Birmingham Rose Show. Chris was honored by the Birmingham Rose Society in 2013 when he was awarded the Bronze Honor Medal for meritorious service.

As a driving force in the world of roses, Chris has blazed new trails both inside and outside the organization. An innovator of programs and projects that he independently initiated and made into a success, solely due to his vision and passion for roses. He was a contributor to the 2015 Southern Living Gardening Book, has appeared on P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home television show and was featured in the June 2015 issue of Southern Living Magazine. His writing and interviews can been seen at HGTV.com, HomeDepot.com as well as various magazines and on his popular website; RedneckRosarian.com, where he chronicles his gardening adventures and explores an intrinsic mix of life, faith and gardening. In 2012, frustrated by negative publicity about roses, he took matters into his own hands and created the Rose Chat Podcast. This podcast, solely dedicated to helping gardeners grow awesome roses was scoffed at. Today, this popular resource has produced over 185 episodes and has reached almost one million downloads. A sought after nationally recognized speaker, TV personality and podcast host, Chris has created new opportunities for the ARS and has always made helping to grow the ARS part of his work. He tends a garden of about 185 roses in Helena, Alabama.

Reasons for these changes are noted. All changes were previously approved by the Board at its April 20, 2017 Board meeting in Monrovia, CA. Amendments to the Bylaws are dealt with through electronic ballots.
