Why Roses?
The symbol of the rose is ubiquitous. The moment we started working on the film we began to see roses everywhere; from the gardens and houses of our friends and family to symbols in paintings, movies, and architecture we might have otherwise overlooked. Try it yourself. Take a day and count the number for roses you see or smell and I think you will be surprised how many roses are surrounding your every day life.
The Silent Majority
One of the most interesting aspects of the making of the film was uncovering how passionate most gardeners are about roses. Our film features some of the most outspoken and well known rosarians but with a little digging we found that the average gardener, who has roses in their garden, has a secret but healthy love affair with the rose.
Not something you would know about them until you ask a simple question like: “Why do you have roses in your garden?” or “What makes roses so special?” Once you ask, make sure you have a comfortable chair and something to hydrate yourself because it is never a short answer. It truly is remarkable how one type of flower can add some much to peoples lives and represent so much to so many people.
Garden Folks are Good Folks
From the breeders, to the test judges, to the growers themselves, everyone in the film was a gardener at heart. It takes a certain type of person to get your hands dirty and really enjoy spending some much time outdoors, mostly alone, in a garden. We found that overwhelmingly these people were just about the nicest people you could hope to meet.
Making films you get the chance to interact with all kinds of people and our experience was that hands down the people we meet during the making of Love at First Sight: America’s Affair with the Rose were the most welcoming, patient, generous and good natured we have ever encountered making films. It must be something in the roses.
Rose Colored Glasses
Creating a film about a subject as vast and iconic as roses can be quite daunting. In the making of Love at First Sight: America’s Affair with the Rose we attempted to bring to life what makes the rose America’s flower and tell the stories behind some of the worlds most famous breeders and roses. We also wanted to give viewers and understanding of where the rose that is in your garden today came from and the tireless efforts that go into creating an award winning rose. We hope you will enjoy our film and would love to hear from you if you have any questions about the film, its characters or want to share your rose story with us for our next project.
