Selection Process

Each AARS test garden has a Judge and a Stand-by or Judge-in-Training who each participate in our bi-annual scoring process. Judges are not told the breeder or introducer they grade, and are asked to submit scores by serial number. The Judges put plenty of work into monitoring the performance of the top breeds throughout the growing season and grade the roses on the following characteristics:

  • Novelty
  • Form - of both buds and open blooms
  • Color thoughout the bloomin cycle
  • Aging Quality
  • Flowering Effect
  • Fragrance
  • Stem/cluster form
  • Plant habit
  • Vigor
  • Foliage
  • Disease resistance
  • Repeat bloom quality

Our AARS Winners and the winning emblem tag they “wear” embody the characteristics consumers desire in a top performing rose plant.
