Sharing Their Love…

Roy and Mary Schick have been growing roses for about 14 years. A little over 12 years ago they became Central Florida Rose Society members, but unfortunately are not able to attend meetings due to their living in Vero Beach. Roy is an American Rose Society Consulting Rosarian and loves the interaction with other rose growers and with those who want to learn how to grow roses.
When asked, Roy shared the following: “Mary and I presently grow 84 roses, mostly hybrid teas, a few floribundas and one grandiflora, ‘Tournament of Roses’, which is a great bloomer and pretty disease free.
Our favorite roses (in no particular order) are ‘Veteran’s Honor’, ‘Moonstone’, ‘Touch of Class’, ‘Fragrant Plum’, ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’, ‘Pope John Paul II’, ‘Black Magic’, ‘Jema’, ‘Mr Lincoln’, ‘Alec’s Red’, ‘Big Red’, ‘Perfectly Red’, ‘Marilyn Wellan’, ‘Elina’, ‘Ellie’, ‘Pop Warner’, ‘Affirm’, ‘Tiffany’, ‘Peace’, ‘Dolly Parton’, ‘Elizabeth Taylor’, ‘Double Delight’ and ‘Firefighter’. One thing Mary and I have learned, as much as people love our roses, they really love roses with a scent. Therefore we have been concentrating on growing roses that have won the Gamble Fragrance Award.
For me and many others, growing and sharing roses has become a passion. Mary and I grow our roses to give them away, and we are having a wonderful time sharing our roses! We carry roses to shut-ins, hospital patients, Hospice, etc. Members of our church save large McDonald’s, Starbuck’s and Dunkin Donut’s cups for us. As a matter of fact, our church (Christ Church, Vero Beach, FL) was started in our rose garden. Each weekend we generally share 36 containers (cups) with four roses in each one. August and September are somewhat lighter. Mid-week we also cut roses for other friends and people who need cheer and TLC.
The response we receive when giving roses to others is amazing. It fills a deep-seated need to be loved and appreciated. The joy expressed by lonely and/or suffering people is a blessing beyond belief.”
